Metadata: 1976 Eastern Irish Sea Groundfish Survey Catch Data - Silver Star Time Series
Abstract:
A series of groundfish surveys were carried out on the fishing vessel Silver Star from 1976 to 1991 in the eastern Irish Sea. Fishing took place using a Boris Goshawk trawl towed for an hour. This data is from the 3 surveys carried out during 1976. Numbers at length by centimetre of the main commercial fish species are recorded. Station positions by area are recorded.
Data holder:

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Three cruises were carried out in 1976: - Silver Star 01/76 (10th March - 19th March) Work began on 10th March, fishing was possible on seven days between then and 19th March and a total of 27 stations were completed (although damage to the cod-end invalidated one of these). The Red Wharf Bay area trawls began on the 22nd March, but was curtailed by a fastener on that day and by bad weather on 24th March. There followed eight days of gales when fishing could not be attempted. Work in this area was completed on 1st April and work in Liverpool Bay started the following day. bad weather prevented work on the 3rd and 4th, but four stations were completed on the 5th April in difficult conditions. All stations in the 6-12 mile belt were completed, three hauls were made in the 3-6 mile belt, and no work could be attempted in the 0-3 mile belt due to the strong swell. In total 48 stations were completed. - Silver Star 02/76 (10th June - 26th June) Trawling began on the 10th June, 15 of the 16 hauls needed were carried out by June 14th after which the vessel then steamed to the Isle of Man to start work there on the 15th June. All stations on sandy bottoms out to 12 miles off the east coast of the Isle of Man were completed by 18th June. The vessel then sailed to Douglas on 21st June, completing two stations and the last of the Conwy sector on the way. On 22nd June five stations were carried out in different depths outside the 12 mile limit and the vessel then steamed to Whitehaven to start work in the Cumberland coastal belt the following day. All twelve stations in this area were finished by 25th June. - Silver Star 03/76 (1st November - 23rd November) Work commenced on the 31st October in the Conwy sector, but due to bad weather trawling was not possible on 1st, 2nd and 5th November. This sector was completed by the 7th, after which the vessel steamed to Douglas on the 8th November, where 15 hauls were successfully completed by the 12th. After a short break, trawling began again in the Douglas sector for a period of seven days from 16th-22nd November. The survey off the Cumberland coast was completed by the end of the 22nd. |
