Metadata: 2007-2008 North Sea Sedimentary Rates Analysis
Abstract:
Carbon degradation processes describe the rate of bacterial processes in the sediment which are using various components to break-down carbon. This could be respiration (aerobic) using oxygen (oxygen uptake), using nitrate (denitrification) or using sulphate (sulphate reduction).
Data holder:
Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, Lowestoft Laboratory (CEFAS)

Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | Carbon degradation processes describe the rate of bacterial processes in the sediment which are using various components to break-down carbon. This could be respiration (aerobic) using oxygen (oxygen uptake), using nitrate (denitrification) or using sulphate (sulphate reduction). |
Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The rates are determined from oxygen profiles or core incubations (oxygen) and using isotopic tracing incubations for denitrification and sulphate reduction (See Neubacher 2012; Painting et al., 2010). Records include data from Defra funded project ME3205 entitled "Marine Ecosystem Connections: carbon and nitrogen fluxes through the benthic and pelagic domains" which sampled three fixed stations in the North Sea. Semi-autonomous in situ systems were deployed at each study site to follow temporal changes in environmental conditions such as temperature, light, nutrients, and chlorophyll fluorescence. Detailed studies of pelagic and benthic food webs were carried out during 8 research cruises spaced to capture seasonal changes (February, April, May, September, and October/November 2007; January, April and September 2008). Cruise sampling was focussed on identifying ecosystem structure, in terms of seabed types, physics, chemistry, and the abundance (as numbers and/or biomass) and diversity of planktonic and benthic communities (from micro- to macro- organisms). Experimental work was carried out to obtain estimates of the rates of key processes such as primary production, zooplankton secondary production, carbon cycling, and nutrient fluxes across the sediment-seawater interface (see Painting et al. 2010) Further details of the project can be found at: `http://randd.defra.gov.uk/Default.aspx?Menu=Menu&Module=More&Location=None&Completed=0&ProjectID=13011`_ 2008 Data available - see `http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10533-012-9749-5`_ .. _`http://randd.defra.gov.uk/default.aspx?menu=menu&module=more&location=none&completed=0&projectid=13011`: http://randd.defra.gov.uk/Default.aspx?Menu=Menu&Module=More&Location=None&Completed=0&ProjectID=13011 .. _`http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10533-012-9749-5`: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10533-012-9749-5 |
