The twin rig trawler Ocean Spirit was chartered for twelve days in August and September 2013 to undertake fishing trials off southwest England. The aim of the work was to improve the selective performance of demersal otter trawls to reduce unwanted catches of haddock in ICES area VII. The practical approach taken was to insert large diamond-mesh escape panels into the top forward sections of the trawl and to evidence changes in selectivity towards haddock and other commercial species under normal fishing conditions. The vessel’s own commercial twin-rig trawl was used for the trials; one rig was modified by including large diamond-mesh panel(s), the other was left in its standard commercial configuration to provide a direct comparison.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The vessel’s own commercial trawls were used for the trial; one trawl was modified by including large diamond-mesh panels, the other was left in its standard commercial configuration to provide a direct comparison. With the exception of the experimental modification, both trawls were of identical construction; the design had a 350 meshes x 115 mm fishing circle, with 160 mm meshes in the upper wings and ground gear that consisted of 6 inch and 8 inch rubber discs. The trawls were towed simultaneously as a twin rig using a 3-warp towing system with a 400 kg clump centre weight and spread using ThyborØn 72 inch doors. The trawls complied with existing technical regulations and, for the purpose of these trials, were fitted with new, identical 100 mm codends. To reduce any port/starboard bias, the test trawls were fished on both sides during the trials; they were changed over to ensure that there were approximately equal numbers of tows on each side for each test gear. This has been common practice for gear trials of this type, although observations made on a catch sampling trip carried out prior to any gear modification indicated that this measure may have been unnecessary.Tows were conducted on fishing grounds commonly used by commercial vessels and characterised by haddock abundance; all fishing took place in the statistical rectangles identified in the project proposal (28E3 and 28E4) in ICES area VIIe, and bottom depths ranged between 71 and 106m. The trials took place in VIIe, however, it is considered that the results can be extrapolated to compatible fishing grounds in the Celtic Sea (VIIfgh). |
