Metadata: East Greenland cod 2005/06 - Fisheries Science Partnership
Abstract:
A Fisheries Science Partnership survey was carried out in September 2005 to provide information on cod in selected areas at east Greenland. A particular focus was the relative abundance of cod of the 2003 year-class, which a trawl survey carried out in 2004 by the Institute of Fisheries in Germany (RV Walter Herwig) indicated was the second strongest since 1982.The stern trawler FV Farnella was chartered under the FSP to complete 35 stations in strata 6.1, 6.2 and 7.2 fished during the Walter Herwig survey since 1982.

Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | A Fisheries Science Partnership survey was carried out in September 2005 to provide information on cod in selected areas at east Greenland. Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Cod accounted for 92% of the number of fish caught in stratum 6.1 and 5% and 10% of numbers caught in strata 6.2 and 7.2 respectively, where oceanic redfish was the most abundant species. Total catch weights of cod were 15.6 tonnes in stratum 6.1, 3.5 tonnes in stratum 6.2 and 5.1 tonnes in stratum 7.2. There were marked spatial variations in size and age composition of cod. Two-year-old cod of the 2003 year-class were most prevalent in stratum 6.2. Three-year-olds of the 2002 year-class were predominant in stratum 6.1, where the two largest catches of cod were taken, and were also relatively abundant in stratum 6.2. Farther east, in stratum 7.2, cod catches were smaller and were dominated by 5-year-old and older fish. Six-year-olds dominated in the catches of larger cod in all strata. Although cod of the 2003 year-class appeared to be comparatively abundant only in stratum 6.2, the FSP data will be viewed together with the the results from the Walter Herwig survey in November 2005 to give a more detailed picture of the distribution and relative abundance of this year-class. Cefas scientists will collaborate with the Institute of Fisheries in Germany in evaluating the results as well as carrying out otolith exchanges to validate the Cefas age readings. |
