Metadata: 1985 Oil Pollution Research Unit (OPRU) Harbours, Rias and Estuaries in Southern Britain (HRE) Falmouth Estuary survey
Abstract:
A report on a detailed investigation into the ecological health of the Falmouth estuary and surrounding area. The dataset contains water quality analysis, sediment samples, intertidal and subtidal habitat characterization listing species and community assemblages. Aerial photography was used to map out the survey sites and are used to display them in the report.
Data holder:
Natural England
Use constraints:
Accessible under NE and DASSH terms and conditions

Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | A report on a detailed investigation into the ecological health of the Falmouth estuary and surrounding area. Aerial photography was used to map out the survey sites and are used to display them in the report. |
Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | This survey used multiple methods to collect the data from the various shorelines under investigation. Data was gathered from rocky shorelines by a team of botanists and zoologists moving across the shore and assessing the assemblages at 0.5m intervals. On sediment shorelines, 0.5m cores were dug out and sieved over 5mm mesh to separate the infaunal species. Sediment was kept and brought back to the laboratory for further analysis. At subtidal sites, a suction sampler was used in addition to the usual recordings by divers. Some trawling and dredging was carried out on the 10th July 1985 by a 10m vessel - the 'Seaquest'. Photographs were taken at almost all the survey sights and combined with aerial photographs to map out the survey sites. |
