Metadata: 2000-2001 English Nature (EN) Isles of Scilly, Fal and Helford, subtidal sandbank monitoring
Abstract:
Report following surveying of subtidal sandbanks within the candidate Special Areas of Conservation (cSAC) at the Isles of Scilly, Fal and Helford. The survey was undertaken as part of the designation process of the cSACs. The objectives were to undertake sediment sampling and establish monitoring sites and baseline values for attributes (such as sediment characteristics and species composition). This dataset contains the biodiversity data collected in the survey collated by site.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Report following surveying of subtidal sandbanks within the candidate Special Areas of Conservation (cSAC) at the Isles of Scilly, Fal and Helford to obtain baseline information. The work was carried out by the Institute of Estuarine and Coastal Studies (IECS). The initial survey took place in 2000 with a second survey in 2001 to establish any temporal variability. The sampling areas were chosen in advance to reflect the features for which each cSAC had been designated. The sampling method used a combination of grab sampling and underwater video to gather information on the sediment itself and associated fauna. Grab samples were taken from pre-determined stations with a minimum sample depth requirement. The samples were sub-sampled for particle size analysis (PSA) and organic carbon content determined. The remainder of the sample was sieved through 1mm and 0.5mm mesh sizes and stored for later analysis. Drop-down video was used to capture a minimum of 30-seconds of video at each sample station. Comments about the substratum and epifauna/flora were made from each video. Taxonomic identification of the grab samples was carried out at the IECS laboratory. The samples were again sieved (500um, 1mm and 5mm mesh sizes) and sorted. Identification was carried out to species level, where possible. The biomass (wet weight tissue dried) for each species was also determined. The PSA was done using dry sieving techniques using specific mesh sizes (MNCR fractions) and a Malvern Mastersizer laser granulometer. Organic carbon content was determined by %loss on ignition (LOI). The data was analysed in a number of ways including a cluster analysis looking at the similarity between samples based on species composition. The results for each individual site are presented and include descriptive text, raw data tables, the results of similarity testing and characteristic species information (i.e. abundance).
