Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | A data set of a grab survey which was conducted to assess the sediment classification of Southannan Sands, a large mudflat on the west coast of Scotland. |
Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | This data set was collected by scientific members of the University Marine Biological Station Millport (UMBSM). Images of the Southannan Sands sediment were produced by a Geo Acoustics sidescan sonar system. The system was operated at 410 kHz at a swathe of 220-300m during the survey. Areas of the sea bed observed during the study were classified into categories using an Acoustic Ground Discrimination System (AGDS) (Quester Tangent Corporation series V (QTCV)). The system was combined with an Echosounder (Simrad EK60), which was operated at a frequency of 38 kHz, and a Differential GPS receiver (GN30D) to produce a ground classification unit. During the study, five different sediment ground types were identified: Fine sand; Fine mud; Muddy sand; Coarse mud; and Muddy substrate. Confirmation of the precision of acoustic data in distinguishing sea bed characteristics was achieved by undertaking grab samples. Acoustic sidescan images and a mosaic of sample sites were obtained. |
