Metadata: 2000 English Nature (EN) Flamborough Head, intertidal survey
Abstract:
Report following surveying of the intertidal zone within the Flamborough Head candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC). The aims of the survey were to compile (using both existing information and field survey) a biotope distribution map for the intertidal reefs, select a number of intertidal transects encompassing a range of biotopes and to produce accurate descriptions and diagrams of the zonation of littoral biotopes of each transect.

The aims of the survey were to compile (using both existing information and field survey) a biotope distribution map for the intertidal reefs, select a number of intertidal transects encompassing a range of biotopes and to produce accurate descriptions and diagrams of the zonation of littoral biotopes of each transect. The mapping surveys were carried out either on foot or from a boat. Biotope distributions found along a transect on the shore were marked onto copies of aerial photographs or Ordnance survey maps (both scale 1:5,000). Shore profiles were also drawn to illustrate the topography of the transect. Following the days field work, neat maps were drawn with each biotope enclosed within a polygon. Each polygon was given a number which corresponded to the biotope code, site number, number of relevent biotype descriptions and any other notes. Photographs were also taken. Following the mapping survey monitoring transects were established. Along each transect the position of boundaries between biotypes, changes in substrate and physical features were noted and used to divide the transect into sections. In addition, Phase 2 habitats sheets were completed for each section including information on the abundance of major cover species recorded as percentage cover (no semi-quantitative abundaces) and other species recorded as present. Again, photographs of the transect adn relocation features were taken. The data was then collated using a Geographic Information System (GIS). The polygons indicating biotopes poresent on the shore were combined to reduce the number if individual polygons. Polygons combingin multiple biotypes were mapped as mosaic or mixtures. An Excel spreadsheet of the data was also produced. The report looks at the results for the intertidal mapping survey (including informaiton such as the number of polygons representing each biotype) and the monitoring transects as well as descriptions of the biotypes found and the coastline of the cSAC.
