Metadata: 1998-2011 UMBSM Clyde Sea Rocky Shore Surveys
Abstract:
Two rocky-shore sites on the Isle of Cumbrae, Farland Point and White Bay, are surveyed semi-annually (March/April and August/September) in class exercises in undergraduate marine biology field courses. White Bay (a relatively sheltered shore) is located at the northern end of the island, while Farland Point (a moderately exposed shore) is located towards the south. Farland Point is subjected to prevailing SW winds. At both sites, the shore profile is measured and the abundance of selected species is assessed semi-quantitatively on an ESACFOR scale. The presence of other species is recorded in relation to major littoral zone (littoral fringe, eulittoral zone, sublittoral fringe) and microhabitat (on algae; in kelp holdfasts; under overhangs or in crevices; in rockpools; on open rock; under stones).

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Rocky shore surveys at Farland Point and White Bay (Isle of Cumbrae, Firth of Clyde) were conducted by undergraduate students under the supervision of academic staff during marine biological field courses held by the University Marine Biological Station Millport (UMBSM). The UMBSM is situated on the Isle of Cumbrae, in the Firth of Clyde and is recognized as a National Facility for marine biological field work by the Higher Education Funding Council due to the support (teaching and facilities) which UMBSM provides for universities and colleges throughout the UK. Transects are laid from the upper limit of /Verrucaria maura/ straight down the shore to the lowest level exposed by the tide. At White Bay, stations are marked at 5 metre intervals along the transect using a surveying tape measure. At Farland Point, stations are marked at 2 metre intervals using a 2 m bar held horizontally with a spirit level, with the upshore end touching the ground. At White Bay, the heights of stations above the water level at low tide was measured with a Leica NA700 level. The time of the water level reading was noted. At Farland Point, the heights of stations above the next lower one was measured as the drop from the free end of the 2 m bar to the ground. The height of the last station above the water was measured and the time noted. The height of low tide measured by the tide gauge at Keppel Pier (NS 1769 5454) was used to calculate station heights relative to chart datum. The abundance of selected species at each station was assessed semi-quantitatively on an ESACFOR scale. In addition, a general search was made for as many species as could be found, and the presence of these was recorded in relation to major zone on the shore (littoral fringe, eulittoral zone, sublittoral fringe) and microhabitat (on algae, in kelp holdfasts, under overhangs or in crevices, in rockpools, or under stones our boulders). The surveys and species identifications are supervised by UMBSM academic staff. |
