Metadata: 1988-2011 University Marine Biological Station Millport (UMBSM) Clyde Sea Kames Bay Survey
Abstract:
A continuous long term study into the characteristic biodiversity of a sandy shore (Kames Bay) was carried out by students during a marine biology field course at the University Marine Biological Station Millport (UMBSM). The sheltered beach at Kames Bay is a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and is situated on the southern coast of Great Cumbrae Island, Firth of Clyde.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Kames Bay surveys were conducted continuously twice per year within the period of 1988-2011. Biological surveys were undertaken by undergraduate students during a marine biological field course held by the University Marine Biological Station Millport (UMBSM). The UMBSM is situated on the Isle of Cumbrae, in the Firth of Clyde and is recognised as a National Facility for marine biological field work by the higher education funding council due to the support (teaching and facilities) which UMBSM provides universities and colleges throughout the UK. Transect lines are marked out on the sandy shore during each survey by academic members of staff. Transect stations are spaced 20m apart and run from the top of the shore down at a gradient. The number of stations on some surveys varied due to the level of the sea during that particular survey. The relative heights of each of the transect stations and tidal inundation are recorded to produce a shore profile. Water level at the time of survey was recorded on a tide gauge situated at Keppel Pier (UMBSM). Levelling of transect stations was achieved by using a Leica NA700 series level. Quantitative sampling of zoobenthos was conducted at the transect stations. Two 0.1m squared x 10cm deep sand box-quadrats were used to sample species density at each station. This resulted in 0.2m squared x 5 (per meter squared) to be sampled. Samples were sieved through a 1mm mesh. Species samples which were obtained were placed into labelled jars and transported back to the UMBSM laboratory for further identification and analysis. A qualitative collection of zoobenthos was performed across Kames bay during the survey. Samples were placed in jars ad taken back to the laboratory at UMBSM for further identification. |
