Metadata: 1939-1946 Southern Isle of Man Amphipoda records
Abstract:
Pectenogammarus planicrurus presence record from a survey of amphipoda in southern end of the Isle of Man, within a 10 mile radius of Port Erin. The object of the survey was to revise records of the area and to obtain additional information about the habitats of the species found. This survey was collated by MarLIN as part of a contract to find information on the distribution of species and habitats in the Irish Sea as part of the Irish Sea Pilot project. Only selected data was entered from the survey.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The survey, starting in November 1939, was interrupted by the war and continued in early 1946. It covered the amphipoda of the southern end of the Isle of Man. The object of the survey was to revise records of the area and to obtain additional information about the habitats of the species found. The survey took place along coastline within a radius of 10 miles from Port Erin. Offshore sites were included in the later period, within a few miles of Port Erin Bay, at depths of 40m. Likely habitats on the shore (rock facies, under rocks and algae) were searched and any amphipods found were placed in tubes to be investigated in the laboratory. Notes were made on spot abundance and each part of the collection referred to the nearest tidal level. Fauna was collected from pools with a hand net. Various gear was used for offshore faunal collection and it was concluded that the fine-meshed dredge was the most useful instrument for collecting amphipods. This survey was collated by MarLIN as part of a contract to find information on the distribution of species and habitats in the Irish Sea as part of the Irish Sea Pilot project. Only selected data was entered from the survey. |
