In April 1992 the MNCR initiated a two-year survey of the coastline from Dunbar, south-east Scotland to Bridlington, north-east England: MNCR Sector 5, together with the most south-easterly part of Sector 4 (North Berwick Dunbar). The survey was undertaken by an outposted MNCR team based at the Dove marine Laboratory, University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne and Wear. The coast between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Beadnell, including the Farne Islands, was subject of a previous MNCR survey (Conner 1989). Data from this earlier survey has been incorporated into that gathered 1992 to provide a more complete account of the range of biotopes present along the Northumberland coast. Sabellaria spinulosa and Sabellaria alveolata presence records are given from the survey of Eyemouth (Berwickshire) to Alnmouth (Northumberland). Photographs of habitats, communities and species were taken at most sites to provide a permanent record of the area. This survey was collated by MarLIN as part of a data collation contract for species on the provisional list of nationally important marine features (Lieberknecht et al. 2004).

Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The MNCR initiated a two-year survey of the coastline from Dunbar, south-east Scotland to Bridlington, north-east England: MNCR Sector 5, together with the most south-easterly part of Sector 4 (North Berwick Dunbar). The survey was undertaken by an outposted MNCR team based at the Dove marine Laboratory, University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne and Wear. The report deals with the survey covering the area from Eyemouth, south-east Scotland, to marden Rocks, just north of Alnmouth, Northumberland. The coast between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Beadnell, including the Farne Islands, was subject of a previous MNCR survey (Conner 1989). Data from this earlier survey has been incorporated into that gathered in 1992 to provide a more complete account of the range of biotopes present along the Northumberland coast. The area covered by this report was surveyed between 1 June and 31 August 1992. Sites were surveyed following standard MNCR methods (Hiscock 1990) and the information recorded onto MNCR recording forms. Sediment shores were surveyed for widely dispersed macrofauna by digging over an area of ca 1 m2 to a depth of 30 cm and noting the abundance of conspicious species. Infaunal species were sampled by taking four 0.01 m2 core samples to a depth of 20 cm which were washed over a 0.5 sieve. Sublittoral sediments were surveyed for widely dispersed macrofauna by digging over an area of about 1 m2 using a diver's knife. The sediment was then cored in a similar manner to that described for sediment shores although lighter weight cores (diameter 6.3 cm, length 30 cm) were used by divers in preference to the larger steel cores used on the shore. Photos of habitats, communities and species were taken at most sites to provide a permanent record of the area. |
