File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | 7cdbc86fb92262d52c09e1b06676b58c |
Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | MRMLN00400000073 |
Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 1994-10-08 |
End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 1994-10-13 |
Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |

Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | Marine benthic species presence/absence data from an environmental assessment for proposed aggregate dredging areas in the southern North Sea. |
Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Benthic samples were obtained using a Hamon Grab. Three invertebrate samples taken from each site. The samples were sieved sequentially through 5mm and 1mm sieves, with each portion kept separately. The macroinvertebrates retained by the sieves were enumerated and identified to species level. Fish and other benthic organisms were qualitatively surveyed using a 2m beam trawl fitted with a 12mm stretched mesh net. Two trawls of approximately 10 minutes duration were carried out in each of the proposed dredge areas, and two in each of the designated reference areas. All fish species trawled were identified and enumerated, the presence of each type of crustacean species trawled was also noted, as was the presence of colonial invertebrates such as Flustra. 1 and 2kg of sediment was subsampled from one of the three grab samples taken for macroinvertebrate taxonomy this was used to analyse sediment particle size. Particle sizes were measured using a modification of the Grimshaw (1989) hydrometry/wet sieving technique. An 0.2m2 Hamon grab was used to obtain sediment samples, from which which a small amount was collected and returned to the laboratory for examination. A coarse mesh, of approximately 15mm, was used to separate the large stones and pebbles from the remaining material. These samples were also inspected for encrusting fauna, epifauna and infauna. All extracted fauna was fixed on board with 8% buffered formaldehyde solution on board and returned to the laboratory for identification. Trawl surveys were also carried out where possible at corresponding stations to the grab sampling stations; this was done using a Newhaven scallop dredge. Large animals (over 1cm) were identified and counted on board. Sessile animals were recorded on 5 point estimated abundance scale (ACFOR). The trawl contents were all identified and photographed.total of 56 stations were sampled with the main sampling grid (which contained 53 stations) covering over 60nm. A Sercel Differential GPS navigation system was used to determine the vessel's position. A number of replicate samples (ranging from 3 - 9 samples) were taken at each station. Surveys took place from the 14th to the 17th of September 1995 but the dates on which individual trawls were carried out is not known. This data has been restricted and only presence/absence data is available online. |
