Metadata: 1833-1957 The Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom (MBA) Plymouth Marine Fauna (PMF) records from various sources
Abstract:
This is a digitised version of the third edition of the Plymouth Marine Fauna. It contains a complete list of every fauna species found from Exmouth to Dodman Point (near Penare, Cornwall) as of its publication in 1957. In general the area covered by the list stretches along the coast from Start Point in Devon to Looe in Cornwall and southwards to the outer Channel grounds. In addition, records are included for Salcombe, Torbay and Exmouth, and very occasionally elsewhere, such as the north coast of Cornwall. This edition was edited by Dr. D.P. Wilson and Mr. G.M. Spooner. The following are the names of those who have been responsible for the revision of the records of the different species in their respective groups. These are arranged in the order in which the groups are printed in the fauna list. Mastigophora (Dr. L. E. R. Picken); Foraminifera (Mr. C. D. Ovey); Acantharia, Radiolaria, Heliozoa (Dr. L. E. R. Picken); Sporozoa (Dr. Helen P. Goodrich); Ciliophora (Dr. Maria Felinska); Mesozoa (Dr. D. Atkins); Porifera (Dr. M. Burton, with additions by Mr. G. R. Forster); Hydroida (Dr. W. J. Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | This information was compiled and collated by the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom. Each chapter was collated by an expert in the respective fields. A growing need for scientific knowledge not only of the seashore but of the shallow seas, on which the country's commercial fisheries depend, led to the foundation of the Marine Biological Association's Laboratory at Plymouth in the 1880's. Among contributions made by the Plymouth Laboratory has been the Plymouth Marine Fauna (3rd ed, present record) which contains descriptions of the shores and marine organisms within about thirty miles of Plymouth. |
