Metadata: 2011 Envision Mapping Ltd Berwickshire and North Northumberland European Marine Site (EMS) Survey of the intertidal sand and mud flats
Abstract:
This report shows the results of an intertidal survey showing the biotope composition and sediment characteristics at various sites across the berwickshire and North Northumberland European Marine Site, with an aim of mapping the sites to be easily found for later repeats of the investigation. A resurvey of the rocky shore transects established in 2002 and 2009 as part of the monitoring program to assess if there has been any change in the favourable status of the Berwickshire and North Northumberland Coast Special Area for Conservation (European Marine Site). Four sites on the Berwickshire and North Northumberland European Marine Site were surveyed in order to assess the condition of intertidal sand and mud flats and establish a baseline for characterisation and future monitoring of the large shallow inlets and bays feature of the site. These sites are: Fenham Flats; Budle Bay; Beadnell Bay; and Embleton Bay. Four rocky shore transects were established on the rocks, one at each of the northern and southern ends of Embleton and Beadnell Bays. Six transects were established on the sand within those bays and a further five in each of Budle Bay and Fenham Flats (twenty in all). All transects were profiled and the biotopes described. Quadrats were used to quantify conspicuous species present on the sediment transects, particularly Arenicola marina, Mytlus edulis, and sea grasses. Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. Sediment samples were taken on all soft sediment transects and samples for infaunal analysis were taken at selected locations in Budle Bay and Fenham Flats. All transects were accurately located using a differential GPS and it should be possible for them to be resurveyed in the future. Some recommendations were suggested for their resurvey for monitoring purposes. All biotopes have been coded according to the JNCC Marine Habitats Classification Version 04.05. (JNCC, 3) [http://www.jncc.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=1584]. The distances were measured using a 100m tape with key waypoints marked with a dGPS. A Leica Jogger 24 Optical Level (of a type often referred to as a รข??Dumpy Level?) was used for profiling in place of a level and cross-staff to give increased accuracy. The method for using the level was based on the technique described by the Field Studies Council for creating shore profiles (Field Studies Council) [http://www.field-studies-council.org/documents/centres/slapton/start%20bay%20resources/Dumpy%20Method.pdf] and was adapted using a dGPS for positioning and distance estimation.
