Metadata: 1992 Marine Nature Conservation Review (MNCR) south-east Scotland from North Berwick to River Tweed survey
Abstract:
Sabellaria spinulosa presence records from a 1992 survey of the coastline of south-east Scotland from North Berwick to the river Tweed. Marine habitats and communities of south-east Scotland were surveyed during the period June - September 1992. In April 1992, the MNCR initiated a two-year project to survey the coastline from North Berwick, south-east Scotland to Bridlington, north-east England; this area represents MNCR coastal Sector 5, together with the most south-easterly part of Sector 4 (North Berwick - Dunbar). Sites were surveyed following the standard MNCR methods (Hiscock 1990) and the information recorded onto MNCR recording forms. During 1992, surveys concentrated on the open coast from North Berwick to Craster, Northumberland, and the major and minor estuaries throughout Sector 5. The report describes the coast from North Berwick, East Lothian to the River Tweed, Northumberland. Sites were selected to survey typical and representative habitats together with any unusual or uncommon habitats within the survey area. Photographs of habitats, communities and species were taken at most sites to provide a permanent record of the area. This survey was collated by MarLIN as part of a data collation contract for species on the provisional list of nationally important marine features (Lieberknecht et al. 2004).

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The MNCR initiated a two-year project to survey the coastline from North Berwick, south-east Scotland to Bridlington, north-east England; this area represents MNCR coastal Sector 5, together with the most south-easterly part of Sector 4 (North Berwick - Dunbar). Littoral sites were located approximately 3-5 km apart along the coastline. Wherever possible, sublittoral sites were surveyed adjacent to littoral sites to gain information on the transition in habitat type and associated biota from the upper shore to offshore sublittoral zones. Sublittoral sites were positioned to record data within the major sublittoral zones and the main habitat types to an offshore limit of approximately 6km. MNCR surveyed 309 littoral habitats from 51 sites, and 109 sublittoral habitats from 56 sites between North Berwick, East Lothian, and the River Tweed, Northumberland. In addition 48 grab samples were collected from 16 offshore sites within the same area. Sites were surveyed following the standard MNCR methods (Hiscock 1990) and the information recorded onto MNCR recording forms. Sediment shores were surveyed for widely dispersed macrofauna by digging over an area of ca 1 m2 to a depth of 30 cm and noting the abundance of conspicuous species. Infaunal species were sampled by taking four 0.01 m2 core samples to a depth of 2 m: material from all four cores was combined and then washed over a 0.5 mm mesh sieve. Sublittoral habitats and communities at depths up to 50 m below sea level were surveyed by SCUBA diving. For sediment habitats, the abundance of epibiota was recorded by direct observation, whilst infauna were sampled using cores following the technique employed for littoral habitats. Near the offshore limit of the survey area, samples were collected using a 0.1 m2 Day grab deployed from the AES survey vessel 'Mariner'. Photographs of habitats, communities and species were taken at most sites to provide a permanent record of the area. Specimens were collected when in situ identification was not possible; a small collection of specimens were retained as voucher material. |
