Metadata: 1988-2011 UMBSM Clyde Sea Physical Features of Kames Bay
Abstract:
A continuous long term study into the physical features of a sandy shore (Kames Bay) was carried out by students during a marine biology field course at the University Marine Biological Station Millport (UMBSM). The sheltered beach at Kames Bay is a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and is situated on the southern coast of Great Cumbrae Island, Firth of Clyde.

Internal code | Internally assigned metadata identifier | 4569 |
Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | 1988-2011 UMBSM Clyde Sea Physical Features of Kames Bay |
File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | a597a51cf4acf661f7751216e7a67bb7 |
Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | UMBSM_KB |
Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 1988-04-01 |
End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2011-04-01 |
Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |
Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | continual |

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The survey collected samples of interstitial water for salinity determination and a sample of surface sand for granulometric determination which was conducted within the laboratory. Measurements of the depth of the water table and anoxic layer were recorded. Measurements and samples were collected along a transect. The median grain size (mm), salinity (ppt) of interstitial water, depth of anoxic layer (cm) and the depth of water table at each transect station was recorded. The height of each station at Chart Datum (CD) was also recorded. The salinity (ppt) of collected water samples were determined by the use of an optical refractometer. Water samples were left to equilibrate to room temperature and the instrument was zeroed usig distilled water of the same temperature prior to analysis. Granulometric determination of collected sand samples was achieved by firstly sequentially sieving the wet sand samples using freshwater. Samples were sieved through 1000, 500, 250, 125, 63 micron mesh sieves and fractions (coarse to fine) obtained were dried overnight in a drying cabinet prior to weighing and determination of median grain size from cumulative dry weight frequency curves |
