Echinus esculentus records from a more comprehensive comparative survey of fauna eaten by flatfish compared to actual benthic fauna. Bottom fauna, of a small area near the Cumbrian coast, were invesitgated using a grab and compared with the gut contents of flatfish. A map of locations is included in the paper, but no latitude/longitude given, therefore, an area incorporating all the survey stations has been estimated from a map. This survey was collated by MarLIN as part of a contract to find information on the distribution of species and habitats in the Irish Sea as part of the Irish Sea Pilot project.

Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | 1949-1950 Cumbrian coast bottom fauna and food of flatfish |
File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | ac20982404ce67f91471dec61c033b9c |
Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | MRMLN0020000003A |

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Fauna of a small area near the Cumbrian coast were investigated using a grab and compared with the gut contents of flatfish. Fauna was primarily investigated with a 0.1m2 van Veen bottom sampler. Positions of stations were fixed by compass bearings on prominent objects, assisted by the presence of dahn buoys anchored by Platessa (research vessel). Where ten samples were taken at one station, a buoy was anchored and the samples taken within a small radius around the buoy. Samples was washed through a sieve with holes 2mm in diameter, and the animals preserved in 5% formalin. On returning to Port Erin the animals were sorted, identified, counted and weighed after removing excess moisture. |
