Report following a survey of brackish coastal lagoons present between South Humberside and Boston Haven (Lincolnshire). The survey aimed to produce a list of all the saline lagoons present within the study area, provide preliminary descriptions of each site (including fauna and flora present) and to indicate the scientific interest of each site visited. The survey used qualitative sampling to assess the lagoons.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Report following a survey of brackish coastal lagoons present between South Humberside and Boston Haven (Lincolnshire). The survey is part of a broader survey looking at saline lagoons along the coast of Britain. Ordnance Survey (OS) maps were used to identify potential sites, of water bodies below the 10m contour. Additional site not on the maps were identified in the field. Each site was visited and those with salinity greater than 2ppt considered to be brackish. In total eleven sites were surveyed. Each saline lagoon was described including details of freshwater and seawater inputs. Records of temperature, salinity and sediment characteristics were made. Vegetation (marginal, emergent and submerged) were identified and macrofauna associated with the weeds and sediment noted. Due to the cryptic behaviour of some of the macrofauna samples needed to be collected for detailed examination. Samples were taken from a number of sites within the lagoon and sorted fresh with the fauna preserved. Sediment samples were taken, sieved and the material retained preserved. Macrofauna were identified to species level, where possible. The report looks at the 11 saline lagoons in turn, approximately from north to south along the coast, and describes them. Additional information on the surveys findings such as lagoon size, depth etc is provided as is a presence/absence list of species found. Finally, an evaluation is presented including suggestion of five lagoons considered most worthy of conservation. Marine recorder survey number: MRNE013400000003 |
