Metadata: 2011-Present Southern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority District Seagrass Survey
Abstract:
This dataset contains video tracks, GIS maps and layers, and PDF maps on the extent of the seagrass beds in The Solent. The data was collected by the Southern IFCA and Hampshire Wildlife Trust using a drop down camera system from Fisheries Patrol Vessel Tenacity over five days during the summer. In 2012 this included the areas of Calshot, Ryde and Beaulieu where the seaward extent of the beds was determined. The raw data has been assimilated into GIS maps showing the known beds and buffer zones for each bed. The collection of the data has primarily been used to create the Southern IFCA Seagrass Strategy, a code of conduct for bottom towed gear implemented in June 2012. The surveys will continue annually.
Data holder:
Southern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority
Use constraints:
Maps are available as pdf documents from the Southern IFCA website. Please ask for permission from the Southern IFCA for access to the full dataset.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Data was collected as part of the Hampshire Wildlife Trust Seagrass Survey, with IFCA involvement commencing in 2011. The data was collected using a drop down camera system from FPV Tenacity, images were stored and analysed by the Hampshire Wildlife Trust to determine spatial coverage and patch density with co-ordinate information. This data was used by the Southern IFCA and the data was translated into GIS maps using MapInfo. where the extent of seagrass beds is shown throughout the District. These maps were used to form the Southern IFCA Seagrass Management Strategy where data on bottom towed fishing gear methods was combined with the GIS maps to give buffer zones around seagrass beds which are voluntarily closed off to bottom towed gear. The method used to determine the extent of the buffer zones involved multiplying the length of the cable used to deploy the dredge by fishing boats by four times the water depth for each bed area. |
