Hosted by Historic Environment Scotland, Canmore provides an online searchable database and web GIS for Scotland's archaeological, built and maritime heritage. Within the national inventory there are over 30,000 records relating to known wreck sites as well as documented losses as well as numerous records for the archaeological and built heritage on land that are either directly associated with the exploitation of the sea or are situated close to the Scotland's shores. Recording of information for reported losses is derived from a range of published and unpublished sources (notably from Whittaker, IG 1998, Off Scotland: a comprehensive record of maritime and aviation losses in Scottish waters). The Datum has not been reported systematically.

Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | National Record of the Historic Environment - Scotland: Canmore |
Alternative title | The purpose of alternative title is to record any additional names by which the dataset may be known. | Canmore point data, Historic Environment Scotland Canmore data |
File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | ca2db2cbf2dc122ef9235cf5475b41b8 |
Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | Canmore |
Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 1994-01-01 |
End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2019-06-10 |
Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |
Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | irregular |

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Data is compiled from multiple sources and is an extract of records from the national database of Archaeological Sites and Historic Buildings in Scotland that relate to maritime losses (wrecks and casualties) from Scottish waters and inland lochs, canals etc. The datum has not been recorded. Recording of information for reported losses (from Whittaker, IG 1998, Off Scotland: a comprehensive record of maritime and aviation losses in Scottish waters.) is ongoing. The project is complete apart from waters around Kintyre, Arran and the Ayrshire coast on the West coast of Scotland and the most of the East coast of Scotland south of Wick to Berwick (excluding small areas of upgrade around Peterhead and the City of Aberdeen, Edinburgh and East Lothian and at the border). Wreck locations are usually cited to the nearest decimal degree whilst the location of documented losses reported are often arbitary. See descriptive accounts associted with each record. |
