Metadata: 1854 - Ongoing Met Office VOS Global Marine Meteorological Observations
Abstract:
Meteorological observations originating from voluntary observing ships produced routinely for weather forecasting and as part of the long term climatological record. Observations are made manually from any given position on the ship's track/route. Measurements include date, time, position, mean sea level pressure, air temperature, dew-point temperature, wind speed, wind direction, sea surface temperature (SST), visibility, clouds, wind wave period and height, present weather, past weather, pressure tendency and swell direction, period and height. Due to the nature of this data there may often be gaps within the dataset.

Internal code | Internally assigned metadata identifier | 5833 |
Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | 1854 - Ongoing Met Office VOS Global Marine Meteorological Observations |
File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | f767f8a48495a86693ccf55d6c8bb03b |
Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | MEDIN-340 |
Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 1854-01-05 |
End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2015-01-13 |
Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |
Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | continual |

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Data is collected routinely manually and using meteorological instruments which are maintained and calibrated on a regular basis. Data quality is considered, monitored and addressed throughout its entire life cycle. Accurate instruments, regular instrument calibration, data formats, electronic logbook software and software checking in both near real-time and delayed mode. |
