Metadata: 2010 Natural England (NE) Flamborough Head SAC, biotope mapping of the intertidal reef feature
Abstract:
The Institute of Estuarine and Coastal Studies (IECS) were commissioned by Natural England to carry out a biotope survey of 8 monitoring transects around Flamborough Head first surveyed by Howson in 2001. The data gathered from the surveys was used to compare to the original biotopes recorded in 2001, and provide an assessment of the Reef Feature using advice from Regulation 33. Recommendations for future surveying of the transects around Flamborough Head are; to have a consistent survey methodology for greater inter-survey comparability, more regular targeted surveying of transects where significant biotope change has occurred (i.e. Mytilus biotopes of transects 2, 4, and 9) incorporated within a less frequent comprehensive survey programme, and surveying to occur during late summer/early autumn when seaweeds are at greatest diversity.

Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | The Institute of Estuarine and Coastal Studies (IECS) were commissioned by Natural England to carry out a biotope survey of 8 monitoring transects around Flamborough Head first surveyed by Howson in 2001. Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The eight transects were established and marked with a rope. They were then subdivided into different biotopes based on the flora, fauna and sediment/substratum present and the boundaries mapped. Within each biotope three quadrat were randomly placed and the flora and fauna present recorded using the SACFOR scale. A geotagged photo of each quadrat was also taken. The profile of the shore was also determined using an optical theodolite and levelling staff. The staff was moved progressively further down the shore and a series of measurements taken. These measurements allowed the rise/fall between points to be calculated and thus the beach profile. The results section of the report goes through each transect at a time. For each the site and biotopes are described, the shore profile drawn and a map presented showing the distribution of the biotopes along the transect. The discussion again goes through each transect individually. For each the biotopes present (in the current study) are compared with those present in the previous (2001) study. Finally, two key features of Flamborough Head SAC (Mytilus beds and the reef features) along with other flora/fauna are discussed along with any recommendations. Marine Recorder survey number: MRNE01340000002E If any sensitive species or biotope records are present within this dataset, they will have been removed.
