Metadata: EDC System Data
Abstract:
Marine Scotland adopted an electronic measuring baord and sampling processing system for fisheries Surveys in August 2013. The system consists of EDC units used to capture measured data from work stations in place on board MRV Scotia, in the fish-house. The system is used to directly measure fish digitally and to record biological sampling. Subsequently all data from individual EDC work stations are downloaded and combined when a haul is processed. The combined catch, measurement, and biological data is uploaded to the Fishing Survey System database. This record relates to the raw data captured on the individual work stations which are backed up, and stored for traceability.

Internal code | Internally assigned metadata identifier | 6013 |
Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | EDC System Data |
Alternative title | The purpose of alternative title is to record any additional names by which the dataset may be known. | EDC Data, Electronic Measuring Board Data |
File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | Marine_Scotland_FishDAC_1220 |
Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | Marine_Scotland_FishDAC_1220 |
Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2013-08-01 |
End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2018-04-18 |
Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | 55000.00 |
Spatial resolution unit | This describes the unit of spatial resolution which for distance must be metres. | http://standards.iso.org/ittf/PubliclyAvailableStandards/ISO_19139_Schemas/resources/uom/gmxUom.xml#m |
Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | Not Planned |
Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | Marine Scotland adopted an electronic measuring baord and sampling processing system for fisheries Surveys in August 2013. The system is used to directly measure fish digitally and to record biological sampling. Subsequently all data from individual EDC work stations are downloaded and combined when a haul is processed. This record relates to the raw data captured on the individual work stations which are backed up, and stored for traceability. |
Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Each EDC work station uses 4 seperate Microsoft Access Databases to store information on smaple processing. The databases on each work station are Lengths (Sample information about species, raising factor, and indvidual length measurements performed); Otoliths (Records of otoliths taken on the individual work stations including species, length, whole weight, gutted weight, and otolith collection tray number and cell (Ages are added directly to the main database after reading the otoliths)); ScotsRF (Raised numbers per size intervals for species); WorkStat(Identifier of workstation and sampling sequence numbering). These databases are backed up once per day (at the end of hauls on a given day) and stored on the ships network. Provided everything has worked, the last days copy of each database of each work station is brought back to the Marine Laboratory and stored as the raw data copy. Backups are stored in individual folders for each work station + "Deckmaster" where the combined data is stored prior to upload to database system on the vessel. For each new survey using the EDC system, a new folder set is stored with this backup information. The primary purpose for retaining the raw data is backwards traceability to work station operators and actual measured numbers of fish (rather than the raised number stored in the database). |
