Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | Exploratory deepwater trawl survey. Gear testing and survey development. |
Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The survey covers a core area of the continental slope from between 55 to 59 ° N with the slope stratified by depth at 500, 1000, 1500 and 1800 m. The reason for depth stratification is related to the strong bathymetric patterns in species distributions and abundance. Additional stations have also been trawled at intermediate depth strata, most notably at 750 m. The survey takes place in September and has a typical duration of 14 days that allows around 30 hauls to be completed. From 1998 through 2004 the survey was biannual but, from 2005-2009, the survey was annual and expanded its geographic scope to other areas, notably Rosemary bank. No survey was undertaken in 2010, but surveys were resumed in 2011. The main objective of the MSS deepwater survey is to sample the populations of fish on the slope to enable the generation of indices of abundance, size and diversity which can be compared over time and space. For each haul, all species are identified, a total weight taken and sample measured to obtain length-frequency data. Temperature at depth and net geometry parameters are recorded via sensors attached to the net. Secondary objectives of the survey include identification and cataloguing of the mega-benthos and biological sampling, e.g. for genetics and otolith studies which is usually for specific research projects. In 2008 and 2009 a series of gear trials were completed for quality assurance and estimation of gear parameters and catch efficiency. Nearly 200 species have been recorded and the data have been used in publications on patterns of abundance and biodiversity of deepwater fishes. |
