Metadata: Zooplankton acoustics on the Firth of Forth
Abstract:
Modern marine sampling tools offer the potential for a more holistic study of marine ecosystems in keeping with broader ecological studies and applications such as the ecosystem approach to marine management. This study focuses on a sand-bank marine ecosystem off the north east coast of Scotland. The area, known as the Wee Bankie, is an important site for severak karge populations of sea birds, the declines of which have been linked to the variable availability of the primary food source, sandeels. Acoustics surveys were conducted in the area to asses the distribution and abundance of sandeels, and in this study we use these acoustic data to examine their food source, zooplankton. Advances in understanding of acoustic properties of different zooplanktonic taxa and in the processing of acoustic data, has enabled the use of fisheries acoustic surveys data to study the distribution of mixed zooplankton communities. The acoustic surveys over the Wee Bankie are an opportunity to examine variability in zooplankton abundance and distribution over several years, extending both the spatial scale and spatial resolution of data when compared to traditional net sampling.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Zooplankton samples collected during 2010 (0710A) and 2011 (0311A and 0711A) were identified and enumerated and the numerical density of major taxonomic groups was estimated. Physical parameters of the water column, temperature, salinity, pressure, turbidity and fluorescence, were also recorded during each cruise with the deployment of a Seabird 19 water column profiler. The 2011 zooplankton samples, both March and June, were scanned using ZooScan, a water resistant optical scanner, and length, width measurements for each taxonomic group were used for biomass estimation and the parameterisation of models for acoustic backscatter prediction (Predicted backscatter). During 0311A and 0711A cruises acoustic data were collected during zooplankton sampling. An algorithm was developed for the separation of zooplanktonic backscatter (from fluid-like scatterers) and allowed the comparison of observed and predicted backscatter. The ground-truthed separation algorithm was applied to acoustic surveys from previous years and enabled the examination of the vertical and horizontal distributions of zooplankton over the Wee Bankie and in relation to environmental features in June, from 2008 to 2011. Differences in the occurrence of oceanographic features associated with stratification over the area were examined. The acoustic backscatter, resultant from zooplankton, was compared between the water column above and below the seasonal pycnocline. Biomass was estimated from acoustic backscatter integrated through the water column in both March and June 2011 to determine associations between estimated biomass and physical properties of the water column. |
