approved term lists

MEDIN uses a variety of term lists some of which are managed by us and some managed by others. Some of the most common are given below.

 • The World  Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) which is an authoritative taxonomic     list of species occurring in the marine environment and should be used by MEDIN     partners

 • EPSG Coordinate Reference System Geodetic Parameter Register which describes    coordinate reference systems

 • Parameter vocabularies which are at 2 different levels – the MEDIN parameter    discipline which describes 12 broad disciplines and the SeaDataNet Parameter    Discovery Vocabulary which describe fine-grained related groups of measurements    and has ~380 terms. These are available here as vocabs P231 and P021 respectively.

 • SeaRegions used in MEDIN are recommended to be from the ‘SeaVox salt and fresh    water body gazetteer’ available as list C191 here.

Many other vocabularies are used throughout the MEDIN Data Guidelines. Primarily these are available through 4 different routes:

 1) The NERC ‘vocab server’ which allows other applications to directly link into the term       lists using web services

 2) The SeaDataNet vocab service which contains a user friendly interface and subset of       the NERC vocabs. In particular the parameter groups and codes may be searched       through a dynamic hierarchical interface.

 3) Term lists are also available from the International Council for the Exploration of the
      Sea (ICES)

 4) Further controlled vocabularies used in the heritage sector can be accessed here.
