Marine Data and Information Partnership (MDIP)

A partnership of public and private sector organisations working to provide harmonised stewardship and access to marine data and information, and so facilitate improved management of the seas around the UK. MDIP is part of OceanNET and is operated by the Inter-Agency Committee on Marine Science and Technology (IACMST)

MDIP recognizes that most users of marine data wish to bring together data and information from a number of different sources and process or map them together.

The MDIP Mapping and Applications Working group aims to work with linked initiatives to develop common resources to support these activities.

On this page we provide links to relevant UK programmes which are acting as demonstrators for the MDIP principles, bringing together data of different types from different sources.

An early aim for the MDIP Mapping and Applications WG is to propose and then implement a base data set to support mapping.

MESH

The MESH Project is a group of 12 partners from 5 European countries who have drawn together scientific and technical habitat mapping expertise to produce a framework for Mapping European Seabed Habitats. The work covers most aspects of seabed habitat mapping from planning surveys, fieldwork standards, data handling, predictive modelling, producing maps in management. The comprehensive website includes an interactive webGIS for maps and data.

Integrated Coastal Hydrography

Integrated Coastal Hydrography is a practical partnership between the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO), the Environment Agency, Ordnance Survey and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). It aims to produce both an on-line database of hydrographic metadata and a shared methodology for the definitive measurement of hydrographic data in the sensitive shallow coastal waters around the UK coast.

MAGIC for Marine

The MAGIC Coastal and Marine Resource Atlas contains environmental and other resource datasets, and is designed as a web based tool to access a wide range of information on coastal and marine resources.

COWRIE

COWRIE ( Collaborative Offshore Wind Research Into the Environment) is an initiative to bring together information to support studies into the potential environmental impacts of the UK Offshore wind-farm programme.

Finding Sanctuary

Finding Sanctuary Is a partnership project that aims to set up Marine Protected Areas around the coasts and seas of South West England.

UK DEAL

UK DEAL (Digital Energy Atlas and Library) is a web based service which provides free information about UK offshore oil and gas and shows the catalogues of data available
