Marine Data and Information Partnership (MDIP)

A partnership of public and private sector organisations working to provide harmonised stewardship and access to marine data and information, and so facilitate improved management of the seas around the UK. MDIP is part of OceanNET and is operated by the Inter-Agency Committee on Marine Science and Technology (IACMST)

MDIP has identified an initial set of three marine DACs who are able to conform to a set of requirements which ensure adherence to best practice

Further marine DACs will be added in due course.

The MDIP DAC Working Group is responsible for this activity.

Further plans for the DAC Working Group include:

o Establish standardized metadata describing DAC holdings.
o Publish DAC present practices and standards.
o Assess thematic coverage and bring in new MDIP DACs.

For further information contact the DAC WG Chair – Lesley Rickards (ljr@bodc.ac.uk).

Water Column Oceanography - BODC

The British Oceanographic Data Centre data holdings cover many types of marine data including physical, chemical, biological, air/sea interface and sediment data.

Hydrography and Navigation Data - UKHO

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office holds many different marine navigational and environmental data types. Central to this data archive is bathymetric and seabed data.

Benthic Marine Life - DASSH

The Data Archive for Seabed Species and Habitats (DASSH) will house marine benthic data and its associated physical and images datasets. DASSH will build on the resources established by the UK National Biodiversity Network (NBN) and the MBA’s Marine Life Information Network (MarLIN).

The MDIP DAC requirements

MDIP has agreed a set of requirements for Marine Data Archiving Centres (DACs) which provide a simple check-list to ensure adherence to best practice.
