Marine Data and Information Partnership (MDIP)

A partnership of public and private sector organisations working to provide harmonised stewardship and access to marine data and information, and so facilitate improved management of the seas around the UK. MDIP is part of OceanNET and is operated by the Inter-Agency Committee on Marine Science and Technology (IACMST)

MDIP was established in March 2005, with partners from the private and public sector, to work towards agreed “public good” goals:


• Provide a data management & access framework for the UK marine data community.


• Develop marine data management standards, and protocols.


• Contribute to the marine component of the geospatial strategy for the UK


• Recommend actions and map progress towards achieving coordination of management of UK Marine Data.

MDIP Discovery Metadata

MDIP is developing services for the discovery and use of data. The current effort is on data discovery services based on the platforms developed as part of the NERC DataGrid. Access to the latest metadata xml schema version 1.3 can be found at this link to a twiki

MDIP News

MDIP has been working with some marine data projects, taking them as "Use Cases" to identify common data issues and assess the potential benefits of MDIP. A draft report on these use cases has been prepared and is available for download. Note that this is a draft document.

The EC announced on 22nd November that an agreement had been reached on the INSPIRE Directive in the first meeting of the Conciliation committee. The full announcement can be found here
