Marine Data and Information Partnership (MDIP)

A partnership of public and private sector organisations working to provide harmonised stewardship and access to marine data and information, and so facilitate improved management of the seas around the UK. MDIP is part of OceanNET and is operated by the Inter-Agency Committee on Marine Science and Technology (IACMST)

Forum on Data and Information Issues in Maritime Heritage

Thursday 12th July at IMAREST, 80 Coleman St, London EC2R 5BJ

You are in: MDIP>Meetings and Reports

Meeting Background
National  (e.g. Heritage Protection Review White Paper in England and Wales), European (e.g. EU Maritime Policy Green Paper) and other international actions directed at delivering and improving marine environmental management serve to focus attention on how historic environment interests are included within spatial data systems.  Obligations already exist for analysis of the historic environment (palaeo-environmental characteristics and wrecks of boats, ships and aircraft) within EU Directives for Strategic Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Assessments, but broader scale analysis of what constitutes the historic environment will be necessary to inform marine spatial planning as may be provided through the Marine Bill White Paper.

This forum aims to consider these issues and also to hold a wider discussion how historic environment information is captured and presented as spatial data and the associated co-ordination and qualification of records between holders of data e.g. the UK Hydrographic Office, Maritime and Coastguard Agency (e.g. navigational hazards), the national historic environment records maintained by respective UK heritage bodies and other charting organisations.

  2. What data gathering is done at present and how can system be optimised to derive most benefit.
  3. What are current practices in Maritime Heritage Sector with regard to data management, data policy, and generating metadata data? Is there scope / resources to bring them into line with MDIP recommendations?
  4. Are there common needs for spatial data layers?
  5. The INSPIRE Directive: What are the implications for the way that information about the historic environment is made available?
