Marine Heritage Forum

The Forum on Data and Information Issues in Maritime Heritage was held in July 2007 at IMarEST (London) and was jointly sponsored by English Heritage, MDIP and MEDAG. A series of talks highlighted key issues, and were followed by breakout discussions. The presentations, abstracts and discussions summary are now available.

Data Policy

MDIP partners have different policies with respect to costing, access to, and subsequent application of, data and information that they manage. Indeed different policies may apply to individual data sets held within a single organization. The different application of data policy to various data sets obviously has an impact on the exchange and use of data across any data management framework that MDIP attempts to develop. Steve Wilkinson and David Cotton presented a discussion note to the MDIP Sponsors Board – with a request for guidance on how to further consider the issue.

This discussion note is available below, as are comments on this document from The UK Hydrographic Office and The Maritime and Coastguard Agency.  We have also made available a document outlining the EUROGOOS data policy, and a paper on data policy presented to the AGI 2006 conference: “The Future of PSI – Feast or Famine”, by Michael Nicholson. We invite further contributions to the discussion from any interested party.
