These webpages provide access to marine data and information, and outline the work of the Marine Environmental Data Action Group. MEDAG is part of OceanNET and is operated by IACMST

About Us

Marine environmental data are widely distributed throughout the UK amongst many government departments, agencies and laboratories, universities and commercial companies. This wide distribution and diversity of data is inevitable and the most effective way of maximising use of these data is to provide information on what data are collected and by whom, together with co-ordination of accessibility. The core activities of MEDAG are:

  • to develop, maintain and make available inventories of data,
  • to develop guidelines for data management,
  • to improve mechanisms to facilitate data exchange (including contributing UK data to global databases).

Financial and resource support for MEDAG work is provided by 6 partner organisations. The activities of MEDAG are driven by the partner organisations who meet twice a year, agree to a work plan and make suggestions for future activities. Work is coordinated by the MEDAG coordinator who reports annually to IACMST. MEDAG forms part of OceanNET which is also the portal for GOOSAG and MDIP.
