This is a pilot approach, and proposals to extend the model to other offshore industries will help to improve the availability of good quality data across more areas
By sharing data we massively reduce duplication of effort between organisations - saving time and money.
All the metadata will be made freely available via the MEDIN portal, which is currently being designed and developed for release early in 2010. Links and contact details for data owners will be provided, promoting companies supplying the data. BGS will work with the industry to make its existing archive of site investigation data compatible with the new portal.
Access to this data is important, and benefits the industry stakeholders who submitting it, as well as the scientific sector. Combined, this data allows scientists to produce more reliable models, so that they can work out how the working environment is changing. The data we are asking for play an important part in the process of making sound, scientific decisions on where to work for maximum results.
